Symposium on Popular Education

The 2007 Allied Media Conference kicks off on Friday, June 22, with the Symposium on Popular Education.

We are pleased to announce that State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs) will be offered to all Michigan teachers attending the Symposium.

Popular education is a learning process that builds off the inherent knowledge of individuals and communities, especially those who are told by society that their knowledge is not valuable. Through interactive, hands-on exercises, pop ed develops the curiosity and critical thinking skills we need to see the root causes of problems and generate solutions.

Media is a crucial aspect of popular education. Film, radio, hip hop and other arts replace traditional textbooks as the sources of knowledge. Through learning media-production skills, we learn how to communicate our own knowledge.

The Symposium will bring together youth, educators, artists, and organizers and media-makers to share their successful projects and approaches to Popular Education. We welcome anyone interested in learning creative, community-based methods of education for transformation!

The Symposium will feature an opening keynote from Grace Lee Boggs, Detroit movement activist, historian and philosopher. Based on her many years of struggle in Detroit, Grace will share her views on why our post-industrial society requires a paradigm shift in education

Symposium workshops and discussions will include:
