Exum
It has been said that education can be used to either liberate or subjugate. Traditional models of schooling encourage passivity and eventually train most students to hate and misuse learning. At the Philadelphia Student Union (PSU), we proceed from the belief that each of us is born wtih an innate curiousity and love of learning. We use popular education techniques to build youth organizers who reclaim the learning process for their own development, and to build critical thinkers who can analyze power and lead people forward.
This workshop, led by youth and adult organizers from PSU, will use popular education techniques to address the fundamental problems with our "common sense" understanding of learning and schooling, the history and uses of popular education, and most importantly we'll guide you through and leave you with some exercises you can apply directly to your own work.
